Fluoride yang ada dalam pasta gigi biasanya berupa sodium monofluoro fosfat ataupun sodium fluoride. Hampir sebagian pasta gigi yang dijual di Indonesia mengandung Fluoride.

Selama 50 tahun ini Fluoride menjadi bahan efektif melindungi email gigi dari kerusakan akibat asam dan mencegah gigi berlubang. Namun ada beberapa penelitian yang menyatakan bahwa penggunaan Fluoride dalam jangka waktu lama ternyata memiliki sejumlah bahaya bagi tubuh manusia.

Pada tahun 1990 Dr. John Colquhoun melakukan penelitian pada 60.000 anak sekolah dan menemukan bahwa sejumlah anak pada wilayah yang diberi fluoride menderita keropos gigi (Fluorosis).

Selain itu Ilmuwan FDA (Administrasi Obat dan Makanan) juga menyatakan adanya hubungan antara tingkat kesuburan perempuan usia 10 – 49 tahun dengan meningkatnya pengguanaan fluoride.

Penelitian lain juga membuktikan bahwa 1 ppm fluoride dalam air dapat memproduksi zat yang dapat merusak otak . Zat ini dapat mengakibatkan penyakit Alzheimers.

Sebenarnya fluoride yang terkandung dalam pasta gigi dapat berkhasiat selama kadarnya tidak berlebihan. WHO menetapkan komponen fluoride minimal sehingga dapat berkhasiat adalah 800 ppm. Sedangkan BPOM menetapkan standar kandungan fluoride dalam pasta gigi sebesar 800 sampai 1500 ppm, namun untuk pasta gigi anak rentangnya yaitu 250 sampai 500 ppm.

BPOM juga memberikan batasan penggunaan fluoride di pasta gigi sebesar 0,15%. Oleh karena itu sebelum membeli pasta gigi sebaiknya kita melihat komposisi bahan-bahannya apakah kadarnya aman untuk digunakan.

Namun sekarang faktanya hampir semua pasta gigi mengandung fluoride sehingga cukup sulit menemukan pasta gigi tanpa fluoride. Kalaupun menggunakan pasta gigi berfluoride sebaiknya memilih pasta gigi yang kandungan fluoridenya di bawa 50 persen sesuai aturan yang dibuat oleh BPOM.
